The Ugliest Words

My Aunt (my mother's much older sister), once told me this memory she had from Berlin as a young girl before the war. When a Nazi or a Nazi sympathizer knocked at the door, people who didn't share their views, but were too afraid, passive, or lazy to raise their voices against them - simply took out Mein Kampf from a drawer and placed it on a table for all to see. And when said Nazi/sympathizer left, they put it away again. I get that not everyone is political. We absolutely don't have to agree on every subject. It's okay to be afraid. But when you only raise your hand to mock and state that those who do raise their voices against an unfair playground for all - are nothing but annoying...you default to becoming one of those whom hides the ugliest of words.
